On this day of celebrating mothers, I have taken some time to reflect on the qualities my mother had and still has that make her such an unbelievable mother. Many of the qualities are those that really great leaders exhibit.

When we think of leaders, we often don’t think of the soft skills that really set great leaders apart from good leaders. When these skills are practiced on a consistent basis by leaders, employees become more committed, engaged and loyal to a company. Employees join in the vision of the leader and become dedicated to the journey.

During my childhood my mother displayed a sense of caring that was not self serving.  She wanted the best for me despite the sacrifices she had to make. She encouraged me and challenged me to take on new opportunities that provided me an opportunity to learn and grow. She was there to support me when I made mistakes while insisting that I learn from those mistakes. My mother modeled the behaviors that demonstrated integrity, a core component to great leadership. And finally she inspired me to always excel and exceed as an individual and professional.

On this Mother’s Day, I want to honor and thank my mother for being such a great role model. Over the years she has helped to guide me to the person I am today.
