HOW WE DO IT: MYERS BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR, MBTI

Who should take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment? Anyone who wants to learn more about themselves and others.

  • Do you want to improve your communication skills at work and home?
  • Is influencing and convincing others an important part of your job?
  • Have you been passed up for promotions?
  • Are you looking for  a new career?
  • Do you have to change work teams frequently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, the MBTI is designed for you.

The MBTI is based on the idea that we a have preferred ways of doing things. It was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katherine Cook Briggs.  For example, we are either right-handed or left-handed. This does not mean that if you are right handed, you cannot write with your left hand. (As anyone who’s ever injured his or her preferred hand will tell you.) However, you prefer to write with your left hand.

  • The MBTI assesses your personality on four dichotomous preference scales:
  • Introvert/Extrovert – Do you think first, speak later or think out loud?
  • Sensing/iNtuiting – Do you see things as they are or as they might be?
  • Thinking/Feeling – Do you base your decisions on facts or values?
  • Judging/Perceiving – Do you prefer to plan or go with the flow?

The MBTI can help you get ahead in your career or find a new one by helping you to:

  • Understand your innate preferences, and the preferences of others, thus increasing your effectiveness as a communicator, team member and a leader.
  • Understand how you like to work, which skills you prefer to use, and the type of environment where you feel most comfortable, thus helping you choose a career that meets your needs and preferences.

The MBTI is an instrument that sorts for preferences; it does not measure skills or aptitudes. All types have their strengths and challenges. Learning about your MBTI type will help you to be more aware of your unique gifts and areas that should be developed.
