HOW WE DO IT: HOGAN
Who Should Take the Hogan Assessment? Any Leader or Professional interested in developing their potential in the workplace.
- Have you recently been passed up for a promotion?
- Do you want to improve your leadership potential?
- Do you have high potential employees you want to develop?
- Is a new employee not meeting your expectations?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Hogan suite of assessment tools are designed for you and your employees.
Hogan Assessment Systems is yet another instrument that was developed more than 25 years ago by two professors of psychology. Hogan instruments are designed to help predict a person’s on-the-job performance, especially those aspects of performance normally associated with attitude.
Hogan provides three assessments:
- Hogan Personality Inventory, HPI, which helps to predict job performance by measuring normal personality
- Hogan Development Survey, HDS, which identifies personality-based performance risks and de-railers of interpersonal behavior
- Motives, Values, and Preferences Inventory, MVPI, reveals a person’s values goals and interests
HPI provides reports which are helpful in the selection and development of employees. When using for employee selection, it will classify candidates as high, moderate or low fit, and will identify characteristics relevant for success in most work environments. When using for development purposes, it will identify strengths and weaknesses and make suggestions of how to manage a person’s career.
It has a 25-year history of successfully:
- predicting employee performance, and
- helping companies reduce turnover, absenteeism, shrinkage, and poor customer service.

HDS gives insights into characteristics and tendencies that might lead to career derailment. It identifies:
- tendencies that impede work relationships and hinder productivity
- factors relevant to one’s own strategic self-awareness
- how the candidate is likely to act in various circumstances
- strengths and shortcomings
This assessment has been normed on over 10,000 working managers and has helped organizations in selection, succession planning, and development of high potentials and other leaders.

MVPI reveals the fit between a person’s values and an organization’s culture and predicts both occupational success and job satisfaction. It helps:
- individuals formulate strategies for their careers by clarifying the areas of interest to pursue
- organizations evaluate the fit between a person’s identity and organizational culture
Core values are an important part of an individual’s identity and thus they are key motivators integral to a person’s success.
